Equipment : EOS 1D EF 85mm 1.8 Settings : ISO200 , AWB , Matrix4 ( RGB ) , RAW , AV ( f 8 ) Workflow : I used BreezeBrowser to convert the files in 16bit non linear and linear ( FM LP Batch ) as well and the Canon FVU to convert the images using the curves provided by Larry Lueck on his site , RAW processing for Canon 1Ds using Canon File Viewer Utility. No sharpening , of any kind , was applied to the pics below . Comments : See , below the images , which settings I used to convert . |

To be manipulated in PS , RAW
files need to be converted to a format PS can read .This is where RAW
converting programs are essential and not difficult at all to use .
Any of them will do the job but my own preferences go to BreezeBrowser and Yarc Plus ( at least for processing my 1D's RAW files ) . BB because of it's handy interface ( and the ability of turning sharpening to 0 ) which CaptureOne does not allow . The average time of conversion with the FCF on - very useful to keep moiré outside - was 11 sec. Yarc+ because of it's proprietary Artifact Reduction Filter (ARF) Note that when this function is enabled , it takes an average 83 sec per file on my P4 1.5Ghz with 512Mb Ram to be processed ... By enlarging the images on the left , you will see my own settings . They are the same for linear and non linear . |

FM LP Batch is a PS action which does allow batch conversion of as many RAW linear files as you wish .
One can choose between a large combination of settings . I choosed NO SATURATION / NO SHARPENING for the file showed above .
I'm very confused about the results I got and wonder if I did something wrong to obtain such bad images after conversion . Fred's actions are always top notch and do brilliantly the job they are designed for . I'd much appreciate any opinion from other users . I'd rather give it another chance rather then consider it as useless . In fact , not all converted files show banding or excessive noise . Also , when running the batch conversion , the last converted file is corrupted .

Conclusion : Initially , I considered there was no valid Linear Converter for the 1D files . I tested again and again and , must now reconsider my initial comment . There IS a good converter .FVU combined with the provided curves allowed me to produce wonderful clean and sharp images . I've found my workflow ! |
