EOS 20D Firmware Update 1.0.5 |
EOS 20D
Firmware-E
EOS 20D Firmware Update Version 1.0.5Firmware specification changes We have discovered that the version 1.0.4 firmware released on October 4 had a bug in the program that handles the update. In cases where the update was performed with a lens attached to the camera, there were situations in which the firmware could not be updated correctly. In cases where the firmware was not updated correctly, the camera might not power on, the camera might not communicate properly with the lens and flash, or similar malfunctions might occur. Canon offers its sincerest apologies to customers who have been inconvenienced by this situation. Even for customers who successfully updated to the version 1.0.4 firmware without incident, Canon recommends updating to the new version 1.0.5 firmware for the sake of certainty. Note: The bug described has been fixed in the version 1.0.5 firmware, but please remove the lens from the camera when performing this update. Customers who were unable to update their camera's firmware from version 1.0.2 to version 1.0.4, or those who performed the update only to find that the camera would not power on afterward, please contact the service center listed on the service information that came packaged with your EOS 20D. Canon would like to express once again its apologies to all customers who were affected by this situation. Please note that the actual firmware content of versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 is the same. If your EOS 20D already had the version 1.0.4 firmware when you purchased it, there is no problem with leaving it as is. There is also no problem if you choose to update the firmware to version 1.0.5, but the content of the firmware is the same for both versions. This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions 1.0.4 or earliers. It is not necessary to perform this update on cameras that already have version 1.0.5 firmware. |

EOS 20D Firmware Update |
WARNING :Some users do experiment problems when doing the update ( freezing camera ).
Maybe it's wiser to wait to see if Canon has comments about this .....
Note : Canonians is not an official Canon site . My statements are personal as I have no insight in Canon's business .
My only concern is to be helpful to my fellow canonians . I still think it is urgent to wait what Canon has to say or to
do about the new firmware . Waiting a few days will certainly cause no harm to the owners and the cameras .
Canon took action : the firmware upgrade download is no longer available .

Canon Inc. has confirmed that it plans to release a firmware update for the EOS 20D. The new firmware (Version 1.0.4) is scheduled to be posted on the Canon Inc. website no later than tomorrow, October 1. The URL will be: EOS 20D Firmware-EThis firmware update (Version 1.0.4) incorporates the following changes: 1. Fixes the issue of the shutter not releasing. 2. Improves communication reliability when using some CF cards. A full description of the new firmware and a set of installation instructions will be provided at the web site. Customers will be able to download the new firmware after supplying their camera's serial number. Installation procedures will be similar to previous firmware updates with the following exceptions: The firmware being released on the Web will require a card reader for the update process. Therefore, it will not be possible to perform the update via a USB connection between the camera and the computer. Once the firmware update operations are finished, it will be necessary to remove the battery from the camera and then reinsert it to have the new firmware take effect. The new firmware version will be displayed as soon as the update is finished, but it will function as the previous version until the battery is removed and replaced. RSMs, please forward this information to your Sales Reps.Best Regards, Chuck Westfall Director/Technical Marketing Dept. Camera Division/Canon U.S.A., Inc." |

New firmware update to be released for the 1D MarkII ( end of June ) |
|
Canon USA's Chuck Westfall indicates that a firmware update is being readied for the EOS-1D Mark II. While Canon is not releasing details at this time about what is changed in the upcoming firmware release, the issues it addresses are described as minor and unlikely to impact the use of the camera by most users, including news and sports photographers. Contrary to information circulating on the Web, says Westfall, the new firmware will not change the in-camera sharpening algorithm or alter the autofocus performance of the camera. Slated for release towards the end of June 2004, the new firmware will be a user-installable free download from a Canon web site. |

Canon Plans to Roll Out Nearly 20 New Compact Digital Cameras |
| Canon
Plans to Roll Out Nearly 20 New Compact Digital Cameras Thu December 18, 2003 05:43 AM ET By Nathan Layne and Kunihiko Kichise TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Canon Inc. said on Thursday that it plans to roll-out nearly 20 new compact digital cameras next year in an aggressive product push aimed at grabbing one-fourth of the global market. Canon, Japan's largest maker of office machines, is also busy jostling with electronics giant Sony Corp. for the top share of the booming digital camera market worldwide. Takashi Oshiyama, head of Canon's digital imaging business group, told Reuters in an interview that his firm's long history building cameras would give it the upper hand against its rivals, many of which have only been making cameras for a few years. "We have a 67-year history making cameras and there is still lots of technology gathered over that time stored away in the shed," Oshiyama said at Canon's headquarters in Tokyo. "Those companies out there that have no experience producing film cameras have yet to create a camera that performs like a real camera should. I won't say who that is." Oshiyama said Canon planned to launch "about twice" as many compact digital cameras in 2004 as the nine it rolled out this year. That would help it achieve a market share of 25 percent, up from around 20 percent in 2003 and 15 percent last year. He anticipates shipping "at least" 12.5 million compact digital cameras in 2004, a jump of nearly 50 percent from the 8.5 million it estimates for the current year. Sony is targeting sales of 10 million in the year to next March. "No matter how big the market gets, we expect to take a share of 25 percent," Oshiyama said. "If the market grows to 50 million units, that means 12.5 million cameras for us. At 55 million, we'll still get a 25 percent share." Oshiyama said shipments of digital cameras by Japanese manufacturers would total between 40 and 44 million units in 2003. That compares to last year's 25 million units, according to Japan's Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA). CIPA data excludes production by foreign firms, but is considered the industry standard since Japanese companies command a global market share of about 90 percent. RAMPING UP PRODUCTION Oshiyama's figures do not include sales of the 500,000 digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras that Canon estimates for this year. Canon launched two digital SLR cameras in 2003 including the "EOS Kiss Digital" model, which was a big hit with serious camera users at a price of around 120,000 yen ($1,117). Oshiyama said Canon had ramped up annual production capacity to 15 million cameras. That will eventually reach 20 million units thanks to a new digital camera factory in Oita prefecture, southern Japan, which will begin operations in January 2005. He believes that China will become fertile ground for Canon and its industry peers, helping drive the overall digital camera market to a peak of as high as 100 million units, possibly in 2008 when Beijing will host the Olympic Games. "We have said the market would peak at 80 million units, but I see it going a bit higher to near 100 million," he said. "In terms of potential, there is no country like China with its 1.3 billion people and seven percent annual rate of economic growth." Canon is also banking on brisk sales of its compact digital photo printers, which connect directly to the camera with a USB cable and enable consumers to produce physical prints without a computer. Oshiyama said they would ship 300,000 units in 2003, but he expects to sell 1.2 million next year. ($1=107.38 Yen) |

Definitive answer about the dismise of the EOS 10D |
Chuck
Westfall posted this answer on Rob Galbraiths Forum:
"The EOS 10D remains current in our line-up. It is in no danger of being
discontinued at the present time.
It will definitely remain current through the rest of this year and well into 2004.
I can't be more precise than that, and I will have no further comment on this issue. "

Defense Days : Thanks to our Ministery of Defense ! |
| Last weekend , the Belgian Ministery of Defense organized a self-promoting show in Coxyde .Too happy to attempt an air show , I didn't mind staying in the queue for more than an hour . I asked Officers of the Federal Police if , by any chance and as it's the use on other Military Bases , there was a parking closer to the event for disabled people . Sure , there was a place from where busses took disabled inside the base , they told me . Problem was I have no access to normal busses in my wheelchair and weighing over 100 kg .Back to the helpfull Officers who told me I had to help myself further as they knew only of a VIP Parking . Could I show an invitation to have access to it ? Of course not . One needs a position , power and/or money to be considered a VIP . I have none of them . I drove to the main entrance and talked to the Military Police and other people on duty . They felt sorry for me but could not allow me in as they had no instructions to do so . I tried to find a parking from where I had not to roll for kilometers but had to give up considering the distances . I had to drive back home , doing the second half of a 400km trip . I had the time to think about that lack of consideration and elementary respect . My conclusion : as there are no disabled in the Army , why should they care ? Their promotional effort was not geared at me . For once , I noticed some cohesion of thought in their attitude . Thank you , Mister Minister of Defense . |
