OpenRAW - Digital Image Preservation Through Open Documentation

Most camera manufacturers use a proprietary file format to store the raw data from their digital cameras.
In the short history of digital photography, manufacturers have dropped support for asset management applications, abandoned settings from older RAW processor versions and changed the methods of storing basic camera settings without documentation.

The undocumented changes in RAW file formats have already cost users of RAW images time and money. Read more...

_N0P5349_resize.JPG (51599 bytes) _N0P5353_resize.JPG (69040 bytes) The CPS Belgium invited its members for the presentation of the 1DsMkII , new printers and the DPP. They had on display several 1D cameras and the most representaive of the lenses . No wonder most of the present photographers ( a lot ) were looking around with sparkles in their eyes . I tried some I was able to lift and was amazed by the quality of the 135mm 2 L . I ordered one the very same day and can't wait to get it delivered . Another very nice initiative was a free cleaning of the sensor . Fortunately , I was the first to enter the ' cleaning room ' as a few minutes later , there was a long queue of dirty sensors owners ! It was interesting to see how the people of the repair center did the job . They give the camera a first external clean , clean the mirror chamber with canned air and give the sensor the same treatment . Then , they take a test pic holding the camera with a 50mm 1.4 mounted on it against a bright light source , put the CF in a Mac to look at the results . Next , they use Pecpads and cleaning fluid to rub the last dirt from the sensor . After a second control , he cleaned the viewfinder and handed me my camera back . Very fast and my sensor is very clean ! A friend of mind who just returned from a one month safari in South-Africa , gave them some more work : his had to be cleaned no less than 6 times but he got it back as clean as it was when new . Maybe even cleaner !

Also , there was a bar/coffee room to take some rest and have fruit drinks , coffee , cake and cookies . The staff people were very helpful , friendly ,and didn't mind to answer any possible question about equipment and software . A time well spent for all those who attended the event .

5. The monitor profile set in Windows appears in the [Preferences] dialog box.
6. EOS Viewer Utility 1.2.1 fixes the problem found in EOS Viewer Utility 1.1.0/1.2.0 wherein gray stripes may appear in some parts of RAW images taken with the EOS 20D at ISO 1600 or higher and later displayed in EVU's preview window (or converted and saved).

Changes in Digital Photo Professional 1.5.0 from the previous versions (Digital Photo Professional 1.0/1.1) are as follows:
1. An image trimming function has been added.
2. A simulation function has been added for CMYK printing. Selecting the profile to be used for printing ensures that the colors displayed in the [Preferences] windows and used for printing conform to the selected profile. This allows you to check beforehand how the colors will look when the image is printed using CMYK.
However, the profile specified in this function is not applied when Easy-Photo Print is used for printing.
3. It has become possible to transfer multiple images to any retouching application with a single operation.
4. In the main window Tree View Area, folders can be copied, moved, and deleted.

  1. Added new functions for communicating with the Speedlite 580EX

EOS 20D Firmware Update 1.0.5

EOS 20D Firmware-E

EOS 20D Firmware Update Version 1.0.5

Firmware specification changes

We have discovered that the version 1.0.4 firmware released on October 4 had a bug in the program that handles the update. In cases where the update was performed with a lens attached to the camera, there were situations in which the firmware could not be updated correctly.

In cases where the firmware was not updated correctly, the camera might not power on, the camera might not communicate properly with the lens and flash, or similar malfunctions might occur.

Canon offers its sincerest apologies to customers who have been inconvenienced by this situation.

Even for customers who successfully updated to the version 1.0.4 firmware without incident, Canon recommends updating to the new version 1.0.5 firmware for the sake of certainty.

Note: The bug described has been fixed in the version 1.0.5 firmware, but please remove the lens from the camera when performing this update.

Customers who were unable to update their camera's firmware from version 1.0.2 to version 1.0.4, or those who performed the update only to find that the camera would not power on afterward, please contact the service center listed on the service information that came packaged with your EOS 20D.

Canon would like to express once again its apologies to all customers who were affected by this situation.

Please note that the actual firmware content of versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 is the same. If your EOS 20D already had the version 1.0.4 firmware when you purchased it, there is no problem with leaving it as is. There is also no problem if you choose to update the firmware to version 1.0.5, but the content of the firmware is the same for both versions.

This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions 1.0.4 or earliers. It is not necessary to perform this update on cameras that already have version 1.0.5 firmware.

EOS 20D Firmware Update

WARNING :Some users do experiment problems when doing the update ( freezing camera ).

Maybe it's wiser to wait to see if Canon has comments about this .....

Note : Canonians is not an official Canon site . My statements are personal as I have no insight in Canon's business .

My only concern is to be helpful to my fellow canonians . I still think it is urgent to wait what Canon has to say or to

do about the new firmware . Waiting a few days will certainly cause no harm to the owners and the cameras .

Canon took action : the firmware upgrade download is no longer available .

Canon Inc. has confirmed that it plans to release a firmware update for the EOS 20D. The new firmware (Version 1.0.4) is scheduled to be posted on the Canon Inc. website no later than tomorrow, October 1. The URL will be:

EOS 20D Firmware-E

This firmware update (Version 1.0.4) incorporates the following changes:

1. Fixes the issue of the shutter not releasing.
2. Improves communication reliability when using some CF cards.

A full description of the new firmware and a set of installation instructions will be provided at the web site. Customers will be able to download the new firmware after supplying their camera's serial number. Installation procedures will be similar to previous firmware updates with the following exceptions:

The firmware being released on the Web will require a card reader for the update process. Therefore, it will not be possible to perform the update via a USB connection between the camera and the computer.

Once the firmware update operations are finished, it will be necessary to remove the battery from the camera and then reinsert it to have the new firmware take effect. The new firmware version will be displayed as soon as the update is finished, but it will function as the previous version until the battery is removed and replaced.

RSMs, please forward this information to your Sales Reps.

Canon EOS-1D Mark II Firmware-Update Version 1.0.2

1DMarkII arrived at Canonians

26th June .I did it ! Two days ago , I didn't know I was going to become the proud owner of the 1DMarkII . I was still looking around for a good 1D . Yesterday , I was offered the opportunity to buy a brand new ( box never opened and new from the factory )  MKII at very interesting conditions and ....immediately deliverable . Today I picked it up and the battery is charging . Truly exciting moments , for sure . I wanted to share my joy with all of you , friends , contributors and visitors .

From tomorrow , I should be able to show you my first attempts .

New firmware update to be released for the 1D MarkII ( end of June )

Canon USA's Chuck Westfall indicates that a firmware update is being readied for the EOS-1D Mark II.

While Canon is not releasing details at this time about what is changed in the upcoming firmware release, the issues it addresses are described as minor and unlikely to impact the use of the camera by most users, including news and sports photographers.

Contrary to information circulating on the Web, says Westfall, the new firmware will not change the in-camera sharpening algorithm or alter the autofocus performance of the camera.

Slated for release towards the end of June 2004, the new firmware will be a user-installable free download from a Canon web site.
