My 1DMkII RAW Workflow

Since I got my G1 , I've always been shooting RAW . Benefits are known by every photographer who is serious about his images

( don't say about talent and I'm speaking about myself ) . On my 1DMkII , I use Matrix 4 ( RGB ) as standard setting . This for what it's worth as EVERYTHING can be adjusted prior to RAW conversion .

For RAW conversion , I use now DPP as I find this program supplied for free by Canon to be doing the job better than ANY other conversion software ( I used all the ones available ) . True , the user interface is not the one to gain an  award with but there is a fantastic tutorial about it here : Digital Photo Professional - Video Tutorial

Other programs will do the job as well but I found this one suits my needs better .

These are the settings I use for my files . Exif TIFF 8 bits ( you may prefer 16bits but I care about my disk space ) . Sharpness is set to 3 .Everything else ( not much ) is left at standard settings .
Now , the files are available as Tiff's 8 bits and get the editing job in PS CS . Levels , Curves and the function I couldn't miss anymore : Highlights & Shadows .
Fred Miranda's new action ( to be put in the AUTOMATE folder of PS CS ) does a nice sharpening job . Here are the settings I use for low ISO files . For files above 400 ISO , I adapt these settings accordingly the circumstances . CS Pro 1DMkII

Some free sharpening actions :

Johny's Edge Sharp v1.0

Paul's Sharpening Action

Sharpening Action on Canonians

Thoma's Edge Sharpening Action

The Light's Right Studio

Twang'sAKSHUNZ - Photoshop Actions

10d-sharpening  10D Finishing . Works well with 1DMkII too

Sharp Control Stand alone proram . Gives incredible results .

To remove noise from my high ISO shots ( above ISO 400 ) , I use the PictureCooler program . Once you have downloaded the file , ask the designer for a password to get rid of the green lines in the converted images .His e-mail is : r.kroonenberg2@chello.nl and you'll get it within minutes .
This FREE soft is still in development and provided there is enough interest for it , the designer plans to improve the interface ( rather poor at this stage ) and make it available as a plug-in for PS .It works amazingly efficiently with the standard settings . Also, it's fast.  Well , faster than other better known softwares we use . Highly recommended .

Another very good performing noise removing software is the one developped by David Marsit . Download it here : Noise Reduction action . It's also free .

More free denoise actions : Imagenomic NoiseWare ,Helicon

Prior to save my files for web , I apply the following values of USM . Mileage may vary accorfing the file but 10/25/0 to 25/50/0 will boost the contrast of your files and make them pop-out .
Although , it's commonly admitted to save the files for web in sRGB , I still prefer to keep my workflow in RGB from A to Z . My only exception to this is when I send the very few files that I consider to be worth an enlargement to  Photobox - Digital Photo Printing Services . They require sRGB . No interpolation needed for prints at 16x20 and 20x30 ( 40x50cm & 50x70cm ) as they do the interpolating process themselves . Last note : they do accept only Jpeg's . Another very good lab I discovered very recently is digiposter - Ihr Bild vom JPEG .
